The Deadliest Mistakes I Made In Affiliate Marketing (And How You Can Avoid Them)

On my quest to climb the affiliate marketing ladder I have had one or two set backs along the way. Ok that is the understatement of the century. It’s more like 150 to 160 set backs.

If you are still struggling to make sense of this whole affiliate marketing ‘thang’ then here are some things that I did that you definitely want to avoid.

Mistake 1) Sending traffic direct to offers.

When I first got started, Google Adwords was the big ‘paid traffic money spinner’ but of late the cost per clicks have become astronomically expensive for us mere mortals  and the only people that can see a positive ROI are the likes of Ebay and JC Penneys.

I would find an affiliate offer, sign up and generate my affiliate link. Then send traffic direct from google Adwords to the vendor’s sales page via my link.

No squeeze page. nothing. What was I thinking??

You can imagine how many millions I made with this strategy.

you guessed it.

zero.

Didn’t even make a single dollar.

After flushing couple of hundred dollars down the Adwords toilet I shut that campaign down.

Moral of the story.

The ONLY place you should be sending any PAID traffic to is some form of squeeze page where you can incentivize people to give you their email address (more on that in future posts) so you can follow up with them.

Which  brings me to my next big mistake.

Mistake 2) Not researching the product or vendor.

The offer I sent my traffic to wasn’t a very good one. I hadn’t checked out the product. I hadn’t checked out the vendor. The only thing I looked at was the commission I would receive if I made a sale.

Don’t get me wrong, this is important but it shouldn’t be the deciding factor. I would much rather promote an ethical vendor than a scam artist even if it means I would make less money initially.

Lesson number 2- ALWAYS check out the product and vendor you are promoting.

These days I have an electrically charged barbed wire fence around my subscriber list and no product is getting through to them without being vigorously tested by me first.

Now these might seem obvious but when you are caught up in the ‘instant riches’ bullshit that permeates the internet it is easy to lose sight of the fundamentals of affiliate marketing.

Please feel free to leave me a comment below. Especially  if you would like to share some of the mistakes YOU have made as well.

Don’t be embarrassed we are all here to learn.
